The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General OO Nafiu, has restated that participation in the one-year compulsory national service is not optional for Nigerian graduates.
Nafiu made this known during his official visit to the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 Corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.
“The NYSC remains a compulsory programme for every Nigerian graduate. It is a call to serve, promote unity, and contribute meaningfully to national development,” the DG told the Corps members.
He also charged them to take full advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a strategic tool to combat unemployment and enhance self-reliance.
The NYSC Kwara State Coordinator, Mr. Onifade Olaoluwa Joshua, while welcoming the DG, gave a rundown of the camp’s activities and achievements. He thanked the DG for the support received, particularly the upward review of Corps members’ allowances and the temporary accommodation provided for those displaced from Lagos.
A colourful cultural performance by the NYSC dance troupe set the tone for the visit, drawing applause from the DG and his entourage.
Brigadier General Nafiu lauded the enthusiasm displayed by the Corps members and expressed appreciation to camp officials and collaborating agencies for their roles in ensuring the success of the orientation course.
As part of the visit, the DG celebrated Corps members marking their birthdays with a symbolic cake-cutting session and donated two cows for their welfare. Awards were also presented to outstanding Corps members by the Director of Special Duties, Alhaji Nura Umar, on behalf of the DG.
Camp Director, Victor Eze (KW/25A/1706), delivered a vote of thanks on behalf of the Corps members, describing the DG’s visit as a morale booster.
