ONDO GOVT UNVEILS ‘ODATIWA WIDOWS CARE’, EMPOWERS 200 WOMEN

— Aiyedatiwa Administration Backs Vocational Skills and Cash Support for Widows

In a bold move to tackle economic vulnerability among widows, the Ondo State Government has launched a multi-phase empowerment scheme tagged Odatiwa Widows Care, with 200 widows receiving startup grants and vocational training in its first rollout.

The initiative, flagged off at the Babafunke Ajasin Auditorium in Akure, is one of the activities commemorating the 2025 International Widows’ Day and is deeply rooted in Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s E.A.S.E Agenda—which champions Equity, Access, Social inclusion, and Empowerment.

Each of the beneficiaries received ₦50,000 in seed capital alongside practical training in trades such as tailoring, catering, and soap-making. Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Special Adviser on Women Affairs and Commissioner-designate, Dr. Seun Bosede Osamaye, described the programme as a deliberate, people-centered response to the hardship faced by widows across the state.

“This is not just an event—it is a statement of inclusion and restoration,” Osamaye said. “We’re equipping these women not just with money, but with skills and confidence to rebuild their lives.”

Over 800 widows were present at the event, with hundreds more expected to benefit in subsequent phases. The government assured the public that the scheme would continue until every widow who qualifies is reached.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Bosede Alade, a tailor who has been out of business due to financial hardship, shared her optimism with RootedScope Media. “This grant will bring my sewing business back to life. It means I can start earning again,” she said.

Another widow, Mrs. Florence Ojo, currently enrolled in soap-making training, described the initiative as a lifeline. “This is more than a financial gesture—it’s a fresh start,” she stated.

The programme also drew support from the state legislature, with Prophetess Atinuke Witherspoon, Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Member representing Owo Constituency II, representing the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji.

“This initiative demonstrates real political will to lift women out of poverty,” Witherspoon said. “The Aiyedatiwa administration is showing that true empowerment comes from equipping people to thrive.”

Product showcases from the training and testimonials from previous empowerment schemes formed part of the event’s highlights.

Rooted in compassion and sustained by political commitment, the Odatiwa Widows Care programme is set to remain a key pillar in Ondo State’s broader social inclusion and development strategy.
