In a bold enforcement move, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has fined MultiChoice Nigeria a staggering ₦766.2 million for breaching the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).
Findings from the Commission’s investigation revealed that the broadcasting and entertainment giant processed personal data without proper consent — including that of individuals who are not even subscribers. The NDPC further uncovered that MultiChoice engaged in unauthorized cross-border data transfers, an act considered a serious breach of the nation’s data privacy framework and constitutional safeguards.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, directed MultiChoice to immediately initiate a full-scale review of all data collection and processing systems under its operation. He warned that non-compliance on any front will attract additional regulatory penalties.
This development marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s data governance landscape, reinforcing the Commission’s resolve to hold even industry heavyweights accountable in the digital age.
