NO RIFT BETWEEN AKPABIO, BAMIDELE — SENATE DENIES CLASH REPORTS

The Senate has debunked reports alleging a clash between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, during a recent executive session.

In a statement posted on the verified X handle of Senator Bamidele on Saturday, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, described the reports as false and misleading.

“Our attention has been drawn to diverse media reports claiming that Senate President, His Excellency Godswill Akpabio, GCON, and Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, CON, clashed during an executive session convened to deliberate on whether the Senate should proceed on its annual recess.

“These reports lack any iota of truth. They entirely misconstrue the time-tested traditions of parliamentary engagement observed in legislative institutions globally,” Adaramodu stated.

He noted that robust debates, interpellations, and differing viewpoints are standard legislative practices and should not be misinterpreted as conflict or division within the Senate leadership.

“The Senate, like other parliaments around the world, thrives on thorough scrutiny of motions, bills, and proposals—often leading to spirited discussions in the chamber or at committee levels. Such exchanges are strictly in the interest of over 230 million Nigerians,” the statement added.

Adaramodu emphasized that internal discussions, no matter how heated, should not be mistaken for disagreement or disunity.

“Debates on policy matters do not equate to altercations. They are signs of a healthy, functioning democracy,” he concluded.
