APC Tightens Grip on Ondo Assembly as PDP Lawmakers Cross Carpet

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken full control of the Ondo State House of Assembly following the defection of the last two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers to the ruling party.

During Thursday’s plenary session, Speaker Olamide Oladiji announced the formal resignation of Olajide Oguntodu (Akure South 1) and Oluwatoyin Daodu (Akoko South West 1) from the PDP. Their defection follows weeks of speculation and comes barely five weeks after two other opposition members dumped the party.

With the latest move, the PDP no longer has any representative in the 26-member legislature, consolidating APC’s dominance in the Assembly.

The defectors, in their letters read on the floor of the House, attributed their decision to extensive consultations with their constituents and political stakeholders, citing lingering internal crises in the PDP as a key factor.

The opposition party, which began the legislative session with four members, has witnessed a wave of defections in recent months. In July, thousands of PDP supporters in the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency also joined the APC, aligning with their representative in the House of Representatives, Festus Akingbaso.

In a bid to stem further losses, the PDP recently elected a new state executive led by Victor Aisida to rebuild trust and restore unity among members.
