Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has paid tribute to the Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, as he marks his 99th birthday, describing him as a beacon of Yoruba nationalism and a figure of unwavering dedication to public service.
In a statement issued on Sunday through his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs, Bamidele commended Fasoranti’s lifelong commitment to education, political activism, and the advancement of Yoruba interests.
Born on May 11, 1926, in Uso, Ondo State, Fasoranti is recognized as a disciple of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and has served as a prominent leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization.
“On behalf of all senators from Yoruba-speaking states, we celebrate the patriarch of Yorubaland, a true Omoluabi and an embodiment of humility, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti as we celebrate his remarkable attainment of 99 years on the land of the living,” Bamidele stated.
Reflecting on Fasoranti’s contributions to education, Bamidele recalled how he founded Akure High School and Omolere Nursery and Primary School, following his tenure as principal at Oyemekun Grammar School and Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School during the 1960s and 70s.
He further praised the elder statesman for his role in the administration of Pa Adekunle Ajasin as Commissioner for Finance between 1979 and 1980, describing his service as “without any dent.”
“Pa Fasoranti embodies the Yoruba values of Omoluabi—honour, integrity, leadership and selflessness,” Bamidele noted, citing his contributions to progressive governance in Ondo State.
He also lauded Fasoranti’s courage during Nigeria’s military era, recalling how he joined pro-democracy activists in confronting the late Gen. Sani Abacha, a struggle that contributed to the nation’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
“The establishment of the two schools no doubt pushed forward the frontiers of human development in Ondo State,” Bamidele said, linking Fasoranti’s work to the ideals of the defunct Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria.
Describing Fasoranti as “an inspiration to the progressives in the South-west and beyond,” Bamidele expressed optimism that his legacy would continue to guide present and future generations.
“As Pa Fasoranti now inches towards his centenary, we pray God Almighty will bless him with a longer life and keep him in perfect frame of mind as a symbol of unity for the entire descendants of Oduduwa,” he concluded.
