Activist and political commentator Omoyele Sowore has lambasted the recent U.S. military operations in Nigeria, insisting that only competent Nigerian leadership, not foreign actors can truly safeguard the nation.
In a post on his X account, Sowore reacted to reports that U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth approved Christmas Day strikes against alleged terrorist groups in the country.
He accused the Nigerian government of lacking genuine authority in the matter, noting that while officials describe the strikes as a “joint operation with international partners,” the country’s leadership under President Bola Tinubu appeared sidelined.
“The attacks, reportedly hitting a village in Sokoto, show a worrying disregard for Nigeria’s sovereignty and the welfare of its citizens,” Sowore wrote. He added that Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has been left vulnerable due to ineffective leadership, making it reliant on foreign powers to handle its security challenges.
Sowore reiterated that only “tested and informed leadership” within Nigeria can protect its people, warning against dependence on foreign interventions or the influence of neoconservatives in Washington, D.C.

His remarks have reignited discussions on the role of external military forces in Nigeria and the country’s capacity to address security threats independently.
