Health sector unions have announced plans to stage a protest in Abuja over the proposed Health Sector Executive Bills 2026 currently before the National Assembly.
The unions, under the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations, said the protest will take place on Thursday at the National Assembly Complex, with participants expected to converge at the Unity Fountain in Maitama.
In a notice issued on Thursday, JOHESU directed its affiliate unions and professional groups to mobilise members for the demonstration, warning that the proposed bills could have significant implications for healthcare professionals and the sector.
The National Secretary of JOHESU, Martin Egbanubi, who signed the notice, said the protest is aimed at drawing public attention to the potential impact of the legislation.
He urged members to sensitise the public on how the Health Sector Executive Bills 2026 could affect their professions and the broader health sector.
Mr Egbanubi described the protest as necessary and called for maximum participation.
The unions said the bills, which have passed first reading in the Senate, have raised concerns among health workers, who fear they may alter existing structures, professional roles and welfare conditions.
JOHESU, which includes the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals, has been involved in several labour disputes in the health sector.
The group has previously engaged the Federal Government on issues including salary structure, hazard allowances and concerns over perceived dominance by some professional groups in policy decisions.
Nigeria’s health sector has faced persistent challenges, including strikes and service disruptions, often linked to welfare concerns, funding gaps, and governance issues.

The proposed bills come amid ongoing concerns about workforce shortages, brain drain and inadequate infrastructure, as many healthcare workers continue to seek better opportunities abroad.
