WIKE DECLARES GOV. MAKINDE’S PRESIDENTIAL BID DEAD ON ARRIVAL

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday poured cold water on the presidential aspiration of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, declaring that his 2027 ambition lacks political viability.

Wike, who spoke during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects in Abuja, described Makinde’s reported alliance with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) as politically deceptive and incapable of producing any meaningful electoral success.

His reaction followed Makinde’s declaration of presidential interest at a joint rally involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APM in Ibadan, where the governor criticized the current state of the nation and accused leaders of failing in their responsibilities to citizens.

Responding sharply, Wike dismissed the claimed PDP-APM partnership as a mere political contrivance, insisting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no official recognition of such an arrangement.

According to him, suggestions of a formal coalition are misleading and aimed at confusing Nigerians ahead of the 2027 political season.

He maintained that the PDP remains an independent political force and would field its own presidential candidate, stressing that Makinde’s political calculations outside the party structure would not secure him the PDP ticket.

Wike further argued that the internal processes of the PDP, including the screening of aspirants by recognized party leadership, clearly demonstrate that no merger or alliance exists.

Describing Makinde’s strategy as self-serving, Wike said the Oyo governor’s presidential project had already failed before gaining traction.

He also referenced consultations involving key PDP figures, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, noting that no legitimate discussion of any alliance with APM had been entertained within the party.

On governance, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on the Gomani-Yangoji road project in the Federal Capital Territory, revealing that the project is expected to be inaugurated as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.

He reiterated the administration’s commitment to expanding infrastructure development to satellite communities, saying the strategy is designed to curb rural-urban migration and ensure balanced development across the FCT.
