CHAOS IN ONDO APC OVER PARTICIPATION OF DISQUALIFIED ASPIRANTS IN PRIMARIES

The All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives direct primary election in Ondo State has sparked widespread debate following revelations that several aspirants reportedly took part in the exercise before the official release of their screening outcomes.

Although the primary was generally adjudged peaceful, organized, and largely free of violence across the state, fresh concerns have emerged over procedural irregularities surrounding the participation of candidates whose eligibility status had not been formally clarified before voting commenced.

Party members, delegates, and political observers initially applauded the calm conduct of the exercise, describing it as a marked departure from previous primaries often overshadowed by internal disputes, disruptions, and allegations of manipulation.

However, the atmosphere of confidence was later punctured when it became apparent that the APC had yet to officially publish the screening results before the commencement of the election.

According to the party’s timetable, screening for House of Representatives aspirants was conducted on May 9 and 10, while the publication of disqualified candidates was delayed until voting was already underway.

The eventual screening report indicated that 14 aspirants were disqualified, with a significant number reportedly from Ondo State. Despite this, some of the affected aspirants had already participated in the primary and secured substantial support from voters.

The delay in releasing the screening results created confusion among aspirants and supporters, many of whom entered the race under the assumption that they had been duly cleared by the party.

Political stakeholders have since questioned the transparency of the process, raising concerns over whether the timing of the screening announcement undermined the APC’s commitment to fairness and credible internal democracy.

While many party loyalists continue to commend the orderly conduct of the election itself, critics argue that the controversy surrounding candidate eligibility may cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the process.

Analysts believe the development presents an important test for the APC leadership, particularly as the party seeks to strengthen public confidence and reassure members of its readiness to deliver transparent candidate selection processes ahead of future elections.
