The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licences of 46 microfinance banks with effect from July 1, 2026.
According to the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, the action followed the banks’ failure to meet regulatory requirements under the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA).
The affected institutions were found to have insufficient assets to meet their liabilities, ceased operations without approval, remained inactive, failed to commence operations within the stipulated timeframe, or were unable to maintain the minimum capital requirement.
