Former Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, has declared his intention to contest the Ondo South Senatorial District seat in the National Assembly on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr Ajayi spoke with journalists in Akure on Wednesday, where he cautioned against any attempt to impose candidates ahead of the party’s primaries, warning that such a move would not be acceptable within the senatorial district.
He said the APC constitution makes provision for consensus-building among aspirants but stressed that where consensus fails, a transparent primary election must be conducted.
According to him, no individual or group should unilaterally impose candidates, adding that all stakeholders must be carried along in the process.
Mr Ajayi said while he would support consensus where it is collectively agreed upon, the party must allow a competitive primary where agreement cannot be reached.
The former deputy governor and ex-member of the House of Representatives said his experience in governance and politics places him in a strong position for the senatorial race.
He noted that he has engaged in wide consultations with key stakeholders across the state regarding his ambition.
According to him, the senatorial district requires stronger and more effective representation at the National Assembly, adding that his aspiration is driven by service rather than personal interest.
Mr Ajayi said he intends to return to the National Assembly to build on his past contributions and ensure greater developmental impact for his constituents.
He added that leadership should be about accountability, representation, and delivering democratic dividends rather than personal gain.
Mr Ajayi previously served as Deputy Governor under the All Progressives Congress before defecting to the Zenith Labour Party, where he contested the 2020 governorship election.
He later returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he emerged as the party’s governorship candidate in 2024 before rejoining the APC ahead of recent political realignments.
