Abuja — Despite ECOWAS having its headquarters in Abuja, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has revealed that Lagos was chosen to host the 50th anniversary celebrations because the treaty establishing ECOWAS was originally signed there in 1975.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the minister outlined the array of activities planned to mark this historic milestone. He praised ECOWAS for its many achievements over the years but emphasized that the journey towards full economic integration of the West African region is still ongoing.
Addressing the recent exit of three Sahelian countries from the bloc, Tuggar provided insights on the implications for ECOWAS.
He also announced that Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon — the only surviving founding father of ECOWAS — will attend the celebrations alongside other heads of government from member states.
The landmark event promises to be a gathering of key regional leaders as ECOWAS reflects on five decades of regional cooperation and looks ahead to future progress.
