Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved the payment of three months’ salary arrears owed to staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, following the lingering dispute between the institution’s management and its workforce.
The governor’s intervention came on Monday, as part of efforts to restore industrial harmony within the state-owned polytechnic. Aiyedatiwa’s approval is expected to ease tensions among the academic and non-academic staff who had been protesting non-payment of entitlements.
In a related development, Governor Aiyedatiwa also met with the leadership of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Ondo State chapter, over the ongoing indefinite strike by judiciary workers in the state.
The union had downed tools since June 13, 2025, citing the state government’s failure to fully implement aspects of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on financial autonomy for the judiciary.
After a protracted dialogue held at the Governor’s Office in Akure, the governor ordered the constitution of a high-powered committee to work out the modalities for effective disbursement of funds to the judiciary. The committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Finance, Mrs Omowumi Isaac, and will include representatives from JUSUN and other government functionaries.
Governor Aiyedatiwa reiterated his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and judicial independence, stating that his government “has always promoted the interests of the judiciary and will continue to enhance the welfare of its workers.”
Responding, the JUSUN chairman in Ondo State, Comrade Oluwafemi Afolabi, acknowledged the governor’s efforts in repositioning the judiciary, citing the appointment of more judges and the ongoing construction of an ultra-modern judiciary complex in Akure.
Afolabi also lauded the state government for prompt salary payments and improved welfare packages for civil servants. He disclosed that resolutions from the meeting would be communicated to union members, with a view to calling off the strike.
Present at the meeting were the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prince Segun Omojuwa; Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo (SAN); Finance Commissioner, Mrs Omowumi Isaac; and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Union Matters, Comrade Bola Taiwo.
