Awujale of Ijebuland Laid to Rest in Ijebu Ode Amid Tears and Tributes

The revered Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, was laid to rest on Monday in a private ceremony at his Ijebu Ode residence, drawing the curtain on a remarkable reign that spanned over six decades.

The 91-year-old monarch, who mounted the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old, was quietly interred in line with age-long customs, following sacred traditional rites. While the burial itself was held away from public view, the atmosphere in Ijebu Ode was anything but quiet, as crowds of residents gathered to pay their respects, with chants and cultural displays celebrating the monarch’s enduring legacy.

Present at the solemn ceremony were some of Nigeria’s top political and business figures, including Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun; his Lagos counterpart, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; business mogul Alhaji Aliko Dangote; and music legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal.

Oba Adetona was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional rulers — a monarch who combined tradition with forward-thinking leadership. Over his 64-year reign, he became a towering voice in the defence of Yoruba values and was known for his blunt views on governance and national issues. Many credit him with reshaping the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.

Born on May 10, 1934, the late monarch was celebrated for his deep wisdom, courage, and unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of Ijebuland. His reign witnessed significant transformation in the region, including infrastructure development, educational growth, and cultural renaissance.

The Ogun State Government is expected to release a lineup of official activities to commemorate the life and legacy of the late monarch, whose influence extended far beyond the borders of his kingdom.

As the dust settles in Ijebu Ode, many are left reflecting on the void left by a king fondly remembered as a bridge between tradition and modernity.
