SUNDAY IGBOHO DENIES INSULTING ALAAFIN, SEEKS FORGIVENESS

Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has dismissed claims that he insulted the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, during a recent visit to the Ooni of Ife’s palace.

In a statement shared late Saturday, Igboho explained that his remarks were misunderstood. He said the comments were part of a traditional family eulogy, meant to praise his lineage, and were never intended to offend the Alaafin.

Igboho noted that references to the Alaafin not wearing a crown were drawn from his ancestral praise chants and were familiar to the monarch. He described the Alaafin as a respected figure in Yoruba land and stressed that he had no intention of showing him disrespect.

“My father, Olugbon, informed me that the Alaafin thought I was abusing him during my visit to the Ooni of Ife’s palace. That was never my intention,” Igboho said. “In my family, we eulogize ourselves in certain ways, and the Alaafin is aware of this tradition. I was only following that custom.”

He further highlighted that the Ooni of Ife remained celebratory and respectful during the proceedings, demonstrating that his words had not caused offense. Igboho added that his primary aim is to foster peace and unity among Yoruba monarchs.

He concluded with an appeal for forgiveness: “I have nothing to gain by disrespecting the Alaafin. I seek only harmony among our kings and ask for forgiveness. I would never deliberately show any form of disrespect.”
