DABIRI-EREWA, SOYINKA, CARDOSO CELEBRATE NIGERIA-BRAZIL DIASPORA TIES

A historic cultural event in Brasília, Brazil, has spotlighted growing ties between Nigeria and its diaspora in Brazil, with key figures praising initiatives aimed at strengthening heritage and economic connections.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), lauded the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in promoting Africa-diaspora relations. Speaking at the event, she highlighted the importance of cultural projects such as the “Return to Africa” initiative, led by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, which she described as fostering spiritual and cultural reconnection with African roots.

Dabiri-Erewa also announced that Lagos will host a permanent “Door of Return” starting October 18, a symbolic gateway aimed at linking the African diaspora to their ancestral homeland, encompassing historical, spiritual, and economic dimensions.

Prof. Soyinka called the project a “symbolic return,” emphasizing its focus on spiritual and cultural ties rather than physical relocation. He praised the resilience and enduring heritage of African peoples.

Yemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil and an Afro-Brazilian descendant, expressed pride in the strengthening of cultural links. He noted that the introduction of new direct flights between Nigeria and Brazil would serve as a “game changer” for trade and cultural exchange.

The event coincided with President Tinubu’s state visit to the Brazilian capital, forming part of broader diplomatic and cultural engagements between the two nations.
