The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning of an indefinite strike if long-standing demands are not addressed.
The decision comes after a National Executive Council meeting on Sunday at the University of Abuja. ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, accused the government of neglecting public universities and ignoring critical issues affecting lecturers.
Seven unresolved matters—including salary arrears, delayed promotions, the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, and university funding—have lingered for over three months. The union said failure to act could first trigger a two-week warning strike, escalating to a full-scale, indefinite shutdown.
The Ministry of Education had set up a committee to review ASUU’s proposals, but no update has been made public. Efforts to reach ministry officials for comment were unsuccessful.
The countdown begins, and the future of academic activities hangs in the balance.
