ONDO STATE NURSES HOLD FIRST LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE FOR SENIOR CADRES

Over 600 participants attend as NANNM and state government highlight achievements and future plans for nursing leadership.

The Ondo State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) held its first-ever Leadership Conference for senior nurses on September 24–25, 2025, at the Nurses’ House, Igbatoro Road, Akure.

The two-day event drew over 600 participants from across the state, with the goal of equipping nurse leaders with the skills and knowledge to excel in administrative, union, and policy leadership roles.

In his opening address, NANNM Ondo State Chairman, Comrade Felix Akintobi Orobode, stressed the importance of strong leadership in nursing, saying it is vital for shaping health policies, improving service delivery, and safeguarding the profession’s integrity. He also lauded Governor Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his efforts to strengthen the state’s health sector.

Among the key achievements highlighted during the conference were the approval of the new State College of Nursing, the construction of the Drugs and Health Commodities Warehouse, regular payment of nurses’ salaries, and the appointment of a nurse as a full-time board member of the Hospitals Management Board. Additional milestones included the recruitment of more nurses and doctors and the handover of UNIMEDTH Akure Complex to the federal government, marking it as the state’s first Federal Teaching Hospital.

The conference featured keynote addresses, lectures, and specialized training sessions facilitated by experts from Hospitrane Consulting Ltd., Lagos. Special recognition was given to ORANGHIS and Jhpiego for their support, described as “deeply recognized and highly cherished.”

Government officials in attendance reaffirmed their commitment to nurses’ welfare, promising the prompt release of pending conversion letters and continued rehabilitation of health facilities.

The event is expected to strengthen nursing leadership and enhance policy influence in Ondo State and beyond.

Conference highlights included a keynote address by Dr. Olaolorunpo Olorunfemi of Achiever’s University, Owo, a lecture on Public Service Rules by Mrs. Dare-Atunse, and practical leadership training sessions by Hospitrane Consulting Ltd.

The maiden event is expected to position nurse leaders in Ondo State for greater impact in health policy and service delivery across the 18LGAs.
