The Society Development Foundation for Women and Children (SODEF) has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day with the distribution of sanitary pads to non-governmental organisations across Ondo State, in a renewed drive to promote menstrual health awareness and address period poverty among girls and women.
According to a campaign flyer released by the organisation, the initiative, scheduled for May 28, 2026, will see the distribution of 100 sanitary pads each to 10 NGOs operating in the state on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The programme, themed “Breaking the Stigma, Promoting Menstrual Hygiene,” is expected to draw attention to the challenges faced by adolescent girls and women who lack access to adequate menstrual hygiene materials and education.
SODEF said the campaign is aimed at encouraging open discussions on menstrual health, reducing stigma surrounding menstruation, and improving access to sanitary products for vulnerable groups.
The organisation emphasised that menstrual hygiene remains a critical public health and social development issue that requires collective action from government agencies, civil society organisations, and development partners.
Part of the message on the awareness material reads: “Together, we can promote menstrual health, dignity, and access for every girl and woman.”
The statement further highlighted the need for stronger advocacy and support systems to ensure that girls are not deprived of educational and social opportunities due to lack of menstrual care resources.
The initiative also aligns with global efforts to combat period poverty, a condition that affects millions of girls and women who are unable to afford sanitary products and essential menstrual hygiene supplies.
The campaign is being coordinated by Precious Olofinyokun, with organisers urging interested groups and participants to register through the contact details provided in the flyer.
Advocacy hashtags including #MenstrualHygieneDay2026, #EndPeriodPoverty, #PadAGirl, and #OndoState were also featured to amplify awareness across social media platforms.
World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on May 28 to promote proper menstrual hygiene management and raise global awareness on the importance of access to sanitary products, menstrual education, and safe hygiene facilities for women and girls.
