Hundreds of supporters of the member representing Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Abiola Makinde, on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest over the alleged omission of his name from the All Progressives Congress (APC) list of candidates released by the party’s National Secretariat.
The protesters, who marched through major streets in Ondo Town, described the development as unjust, insisting that Makinde duly participated in and emerged victorious in the party’s House of Representatives primary election for the constituency.
Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Truth Must Prevail in APC,” “We Reject Injustice,” and “This Injustice Can’t Stand,” the demonstrators called on the party leadership to correct what they described as an injustice and uphold the outcome of the primary election.
The protest came a few days after hundreds of APC women in Ondo State demonstrated in Akure over the list of candidates released by the party, alleging that some names did not reflect the authentic winners of the House of Representatives primaries conducted last month.
Speaking during the protest, a party chieftain in the constituency, Isaac Oyebade, said the supporters remained loyal to the APC but would not keep silent in the face of what they regarded as injustice.
According to him, the protest was aimed at defending the mandate freely given to Makinde by party members during the primary election.
Another party leader, Ife Olasanoye, described the demonstration as a peaceful demand for truth, transparency and justice, stressing that the stakeholders were not working against the APC but were determined to protect the party’s core values.
The protesters maintained that the purported appeal list did not reflect the actual outcome of the primary election and warned that any attempt to overturn Makinde’s victory could generate dissatisfaction among party members in the constituency.
