Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday visited communities affected by recent attacks in Akure North Local Government Area, assuring residents of decisive steps to tackle insecurity.
The governor, who was in Imafon, Igushin and Ilado, also sympathised with families of victims and traditional rulers over the killings recorded in the area.
During a visit to the palace of the Olumafon of Imafon, Oba Samuel Adegbehingbe Aliu, Aiyedatiwa described the incidents as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that efforts were underway to restore peace and protect lives.
He referenced recent attacks, including the killing of a woman and her daughter at a farm as well as the shooting of a resident who reportedly resisted abduction, noting that such acts would not be condoned.
Gov. Aiyedatiwa said security agencies had intensified operations in the area, working with local hunters and vigilante groups to comb forests and track criminal elements.
He disclosed that over 100 suspected kidnappers had been arrested and prosecuted, adding that ongoing operations would ensure those responsible for the attacks were brought to justice.
The governor further announced plans to establish Amotekun security posts in the affected communities and strengthen collaboration with the military to improve surveillance and response.
He urged residents to support security agencies with credible information and warned against shielding criminals, noting that such actions undermine ongoing efforts to address insecurity.
Aiyedatiwa also indicated that road projects in the area would be expedited to improve access and security, especially ahead of the rainy season.
Earlier, the Chairman of Akure North Local Government, Hon. Johnson Ogunbolude, condemned the attacks and called for community support in addressing security challenges.
Similarly, the Ojogbariaka of Ilado, Kayode Ajomale, called for improved security presence, citing inadequate infrastructure and limited police coverage across the communities.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, assured residents of increased deployment of personnel and prompt response to actionable intelligence.
Community representatives and youth leaders also advocated stronger collaboration between security agencies and local hunters, citing their familiarity with the terrain as critical in tackling criminal activities.
