The Federal Government has approved the long-awaited 40 per cent peculiar allowance for federal civil servants following sustained pressure from organised labour and threats of industrial action.
The approval was reached after a marathon meeting chaired by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Walson-Jack, held at the Conference Hall of the Office of the Head of Service in Abuja.
During the meeting, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) reportedly issued the circular authorising the implementation of the allowance.
The development brings to an end nearly two years of agitation by federal workers over delays linked to adjustments arising from the new ₦70,000 minimum wage structure introduced in 2024. The implementation of the 40 per cent peculiar allowance is expected to take effect from May 1, 2026.
Labour unions had repeatedly pressured the Federal Government over the delay, warning of possible industrial action if the matter was not addressed.
The decision is expected to ease tensions between government and organised labour while providing financial relief to federal civil servants amid rising cost of living pressures.
