ONDO APC FACES GROWING INTERNAL TENSION AHEAD OF PRIMARIES

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for its forthcoming primaries in Ondo State, concerns are mounting over alleged political manoeuvres that could trigger unrest within the ruling party.

Reports indicate that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been engaging party leaders at the state, local government and ward levels in a series of strategic meetings aimed at rallying support for preferred consensus candidates ahead of the exercises.

Sources within the party claimed that some elected and appointed officials were subtly pressured to deliver support for these candidates or risk losing political relevance.

There were also allegations that plans were being put in place to frustrate aspirants outside the preferred camp, with claims that disruptive elements could be deployed to influence the process.

Political watchers have warned that such developments, if unchecked, may revive internal tensions within the APC, especially considering the violent clashes that marred previous congresses in parts of the state, including Akure and Idanre.

Observers fear that any repeat of political violence could destabilise the party and weaken its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The situation has also drawn comparisons with Ondo’s historical “Wetie” period, a politically volatile era remembered for widespread violence, arson and electoral unrest.

Analysts caution that deepening divisions within the APC could have wider implications for the party’s electoral strength in the state and potentially affect President Bola Tinubu’s future political calculations.

In response to rising concerns, the Ondo State Government has appealed to APC members and aspirants to maintain peace during the primaries slated for May 15, 18 and 20, 2026, covering the House of Representatives, State House of Assembly and Senate elections.

Commissioner for Information, Idowu Ajanaku, said the primaries remain a crucial democratic exercise and urged party faithful to ensure the process is transparent, orderly and violence-free.

He reaffirmed Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to a peaceful process, stressing that the state government would uphold law and order throughout the exercise.

According to the government, the Ondo APC remains aligned with directives from the party’s National Working Committee, particularly on the use of direct primaries where consensus candidates do not emerge.

The administration further described the exercise as vital to strengthening party unity and positioning the APC for future electoral successes, including President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Stakeholders were urged to prioritise party cohesion above personal ambitions, while security agencies and electoral officials were called upon to ensure a credible and peaceful primary process.
